A new documentary about the scary movies of the early 1900s has created a buzz online.
The new film, Freaky Movie, will air at Toronto’s Film Festival later this month.
Freaky Movie explores how some of Canada’s most famous scary movies influenced today’s genre.
“It’s about how this new wave of filmmakers and filmmakers came up with these weird, weird characters,” said the film’s producer, Laura St. John.
“You know, these are all these different people and these are these weird stories and these characters, and they’ve all been created by this strange new generation.”
St. John, who grew up in Ottawa, has spent decades exploring the history of the genre.
She says it’s a topic she’s always wanted to explore, even as she’s trying to figure out how the genre was born in the first place.
“This was a way for people to share their stories and their memories,” she said.
“There were a lot of stories, so this was a great way for folks to share those stories.”
Freaky Movies tells the story of filmmakers who came together to make the genre they loved.
It starts with one filmmaker, David Brubeck, who wrote and directed the short horror film The Devil’s Hand, in which a man is sent to a secret room in an abandoned house where he’s confronted by a demon.
In the film, the devil says he’s sent to rescue a girl.
St. Johns says Brubeek wrote a script for the film and it was one of the first movies he shot in his early 30s.
“He was always working on something different, so when he saw that I was interested in making a horror movie, he said, ‘Well, I want to make something about this,'” she said in an interview.
“And he asked me if I’d like to do it.
He asked me to do some music.
I said, yeah, I’d love to do that.
And he said to me, ‘I’ll make a movie.'”
That movie was The Devil, which opened in 1905 and would go on to become a best-selling book.
St Johns says the story she’s telling is that a new generation of filmmakers wanted to make their own horror movies, and that they were willing to do whatever it took to make it happen.
“They all wanted to be the first one to do something that they really loved and they were determined to make that a reality,” she explained.
“That was a whole other level of creativity that they weren’t able to achieve until they started making films and they wanted to show their work to people.
So, it was kind of like that.
I think that’s really how the whole genre started.”
Freaktacular, the world’s biggest movie festival, is scheduled to open its doors to the public in July.
